Slalom is a form of competitive kayaking where the kayaker has to navigate their way down a whitewater course while passing through hanging gates. Slalom is one of the most popular forms of kayaking as it requires a number of different skills and techniques. Slalom is known for its ability to push kayakers to their limits. Kayakers start at the top of the run and have to try and reach the bottom as fast as possible while steering their way through the hanging gates. If they touch any part of the gate, or they miss a gate entirely they receive a time penalty. .
